A stylus doesn't read a record the way a scanner reads a page. It rides inside the groove and presses against both walls. The wrong size or shape sits at the wrong depth, and every rotation grinds it deeper into a surface that was never designed to be repaired.
Groove cross-section. A 78 played with an LP stylus is the common version of the mistake — the groove is roughly three times wider, so the tip drops to the floor of it and tracks the one part of the record that holds nothing but wear.
That's the whole argument. Software can flatten a bad transfer's noise, but it cannot recover what a mistracking stylus removed, and it cannot un-abrade a groove. Which is why the record gets cleaned first, the stylus gets chosen per format, and the noise reduction gets set by listening rather than by pressing auto.
Home recordings. Church and school pressings. Radio air-checks. Self-pressed 45s. Lacquers and acetates with a handwritten label. These are soft, chemically unstable, and often down to their last few playable passes.
They get handled separately: examined before anything spins, played once, captured flat, and archived at full resolution so no future decision is foreclosed. If you're not sure whether something in the box qualifies, describe it and I'll tell you.
